"How much does an app cost?" is the first question almost every founder asks, and the honest first answer is: it depends. That is not a dodge. Two apps that look similar on the surface can differ by ten times in cost because of what is underneath: the backend, the integrations, the number of user types and the level of polish.
This guide explains what actually drives the price of a mobile app in India, gives you realistic ranges to plan with, and shows how to get a quote you can trust. The numbers are typical market ranges, not offers. Always ask for a written estimate for your own idea.
The three sizes of app
1. A focused MVP or small app
One main purpose, a handful of screens, simple login, basic admin and one or two integrations. Examples: a booking app for one service, a simple catalogue and order app, an internal tool for a small team. Typically 8 to 12 weeks.
2. A mid-size app
Several user roles, payments, notifications, maps or chat, a proper admin panel and reports. Examples: a delivery app with customer, rider and admin sides, a learning app with courses and payments. Typically three to five months.
3. A large or complex platform
Multiple apps, heavy real-time features, complex rules, many integrations, high security or scale needs. Examples: a marketplace with multiple vendors, healthcare or fintech platforms. Typically six months or more, often delivered in phases.
Realistic price ranges in India
Prices vary by team, city and experience. As a planning guide for a custom app built by a professional company, using a cross-platform approach for both iPhone and Android:
| Size | Typical range (INR) | What you usually get |
|---|---|---|
| Focused MVP | Roughly 3 to 10 lakh | Core flow, simple admin, store launch |
| Mid-size app | Roughly 10 to 30 lakh | Multiple roles, payments, richer admin, notifications |
| Large platform | 30 lakh and above | Several apps, advanced features, scale and security work |
Much lower quotes exist. So do much higher ones. A very low price usually means something has been left out: design, testing, backend or support. A very high price should come with a clear reason. Use these ranges only to check whether a quote is in a sensible neighbourhood.
What drives the cost up or down
- Number and complexity of screens. More screens and more states mean more design and development.
- User roles. A customer app alone is cheaper than customer plus vendor plus delivery plus admin.
- Backend and admin panel. Every app needs a server and a way to manage content and users. This is often 30 to 50 percent of the work and is easy to forget.
- Integrations. Payments, maps, SMS and WhatsApp, KYC, third-party APIs and analytics each add effort and ongoing fees.
- Platform choice. Cross-platform (Flutter or React Native) is generally cheaper than building two native apps. See Flutter vs React Native and native vs cross-platform.
- Design quality. Custom, tested design costs more than templates, and usually pays back in conversion and retention.
- Real-time features. Live tracking, chat and live updates need more engineering.
- Security and compliance. Health, finance and children's data need extra care. See our DPDP and security checklist.
- Timeline. Rushing usually means a larger team and a higher price.
Costs people forget
- Developer accounts. Apple charges a yearly fee, and Google charges a one-time fee.
- Cloud and hosting. Monthly charges that grow with users.
- Third-party services. SMS and OTP, maps, email, push notifications and payment gateway fees.
- Content and assets. Photos, copywriting, icons and legal pages such as privacy policy and terms.
- Testing on real devices. Essential in India, with its many Android phones.
- Marketing and store optimisation. Getting users costs money even if the app is perfect. See our ASO guide.
- Maintenance. Plan roughly 15 to 20 percent of the build cost per year. See app maintenance cost.
Fixed price, time and material, or a mix?
Fixed price works well when the scope is clear. You know the total and the deliverables, but changes are handled as change requests. Time and material suits evolving products: you pay for the effort used, with a budget cap and regular reviews. Many teams use a hybrid: a fixed price for a clearly defined first version, then a monthly team for ongoing growth.
How to get a quote you can compare
- Write a one-page brief: who the users are, the three to five main things they must do, and any must-have integrations.
- Share the same brief with two or three companies.
- Ask for a written breakdown by design, development, backend, testing, launch and support.
- Compare assumptions, not only totals. What is included? What is not?
- Check the payment milestones. Payments should follow delivered work, not just dates.
- Confirm ownership of source code, designs and accounts.

Ways to spend less without cutting quality
- Start with one platform or one cross-platform codebase.
- Launch the smallest useful version and add features based on real feedback.
- Use proven services for payments, maps and messaging rather than building your own.
- Prepare content and decisions early. Delays and rework cost money.
- Keep one decision-maker on your side so feedback is quick and consistent.
Frequently asked questions
Why do quotes differ so much?
Because the scope, team seniority, design depth and included services differ. Compare line by line.
Is it cheaper to hire a freelancer?
The hourly rate may be lower, but you take on the work of managing design, backend, testing and launch. For a full product, a team often gives better value.
Can I pay in stages?
Yes, and you should. Tie payments to delivered milestones.
